Lakshmi S, is a design-educator, spatial practitioner and architect. An MA graduate from the University of Sheffield, she currently teaches at the BITS Design School, Mumbai, the first trandisciplinary design school in India established under the aegis of BITS Pilani, India. In the past, she was also involved in mentoring students from NIT Trichy as a part of the Jitheshraj Scholarship (https://www.jrscholarship.org/) and is a former member of their D&I team.
Lakshmi's research interests center around ideas of inclusion, intersectionality and sustainability in the "public" realm and in everyday objects. She presented her research work in prestigious conferences and exhibitions in the UK. At the 03rd PhD By Design conference, she presented her research work (which included her poems) on alternative applications of architectural/spatial knowledge to understand immigration detention. Her team’s model depicting possible spatial impact of power interactions in a Syrian refugee camp was exhibited at Architecture Fringe, 2017 in Edinburgh. She has also presented her research and pedagogy in various international conferences like Cumulus 2024 (P/References By Design), Gender, Work & Organisation conference, Include 2021 conference etc. Her other passions include developing pedagogy to make design education more accessible, mental health awareness, calligraphy and poetry. She firmly believes that people involved in design & creative research can contribute significantly to the society and the environment to create a positive impact.
